Day 17 --------------------------------- Christmas in May?

Ok so this might be a little geeky, but I have been waiting for this Christmas Cactus to actually have blooms on it for a while. Brandi's mother has had blooms on hers since Christmas, and all of ours fell off right after we bought it (probably because of lack of water...oops). This time we were diligent though, and we moved it to different windows and made sure it was watered and guess what....its finally blooming. Lets see how long we can keep them!

Day 16 -------------------------- Someone bring us an angel

Today's picture comes with a message. I got the news yesterday that my home town mill, also the place where my father works, and my mother use to work is closing for good. The reason for the closure is because the cost of oil is becoming too expensive for the organization to sustain. I have been looking at this from two angles recently. The first one is of a long time business major. I know that it isn't economically feasible for an organization that is spending more then they are making to operate efficiently. But then there is the family part of me. I am of course worried for my family and the other families in Millinocket that make a very comfortable income from the mill. I am not one that likes uncertainty, and this is a very uncertain situation. The only thing they know is the final date for the mill. Everyone seems to be talking about helping out the mill - namely the governor. Now, I know he did work very hard to find a buyer for the mill before, and yes that worked, but obviously only temporary. I just can't imagine that there is a way the state, which is struggling already can come to the rescue of an organization that only employees 200ish people and is spending WAY more then it can afford. If the governor could reduce the cost of oil, GREAT, that helps us all, if the president could reduce the cost of oil WAY TO GO, but I don't see any of that happening ANYTIME soon. It also makes me think of my own uncertainty. I work for a bank, everyone knows about the credit crunch, its no secret that banks are losing a lot of money to loan losses, and I also know that I work in a non-essential department. I just am worried all together. I know I have gone off on a tangent, and this blog isn't intended to express any political views, its really to share only pictures and maybe life stories. So anyway - here is today's picture. A guardian angel - and I am sending this to be with my family, and the other families in Millinocket.

Day 13, 14, and 15 ------------------------- Thought I forgot didn't you

I didn't forget. I have been taking pictures, I just have been so far behind in my wedding photography that I haven't been editing and posting. But here are the days pictures, including today's!

Day 13 - This wasn't dishwasher safe!

Day 14 - The soccer team was practicing when I got out of class on Wednesday, so I took a picture. I will be so glad when I am done with this degree, I am getting bored with it, but once its done I will have my MBA....YAY!

Day 15 - The picture speaks for itself. Me and my best friend, Brandi. I am so lucky to have her in my life! This picture isn't the best quality, it was getting dark out, and I was hand holding the camera, I probably should of used the tripod, but I didn't.

Day 9, 10, 11, & 12 ------------- A long weekend in Millinocket

We are back in Bucksport tonight. We had a great weekend in Millinocket, and of course I was dedicated to the project the whole time. I just have to come up with something for tonight *wink*. The weather was ok, and I didn't get to go up to the mountain and get the shot I have been waiting for, maybe over the fourth of July I'll get it. Ok, enough chatter, I'll get right to the pictures:

Day 9 - This is what our room looked like before we went to bed that night!

Day 10 - This is where I grew up. I wanted to play around with my tripod this weekend, as well as some option in photoshop that I never use. This was actually 3 pictures that were stitched together in photoshop.

Day 11 - We spent most of day 11 with my grandmother doing some chores around the house. At the end of the day we played a game of dominos with her. We really enjoy our time with her and I love the detail and color in the pics.

Day 12 - A surprise for me.

Brandi took this picture of herself and I didn't know it. Little did she know that I had been planning on taking this very picture of her at some point. I love her eyes. They are so dark brown and clear. I love it when she looks at me with those eyes! Can't get enough!!!

Day 13 -------------- Coming soon!

Day 8 ----------------------------- ARGH!!

Part of this project when I took it on, was I wanted to try things that I haven't done before. I have never done a collage before so today is the day that I cooked one up! I thought about this for a while and thought about what could I take a picture of. So this is what I came up with. I had to get some gas today, so I could get to Bangor where I could completely fill up, and here comes the soap box....GAS IS SO EXPENSIVE NOW!!! I remember when 5 gallons was $5. I paid $20 for an amount of gas I use to pay for with change!! ARGH!!! OK, there was my soap box. Anyway - for those who are avid fans of my work, don't be alarmed if things are not posted right away this weekend, Brandi and I are heading to my parents for the weekend and my parents only have slooooooooooooooooow dial up, so I will be taking pictures everyday, but I don't know if I will be posting them right away.
Everyone have a great holiday coming up!! Drive Safe.

More Pictures from yesterday

Yesterday when I was looking for yesterday's picture I took some extra. I should of saved one of them for today's picture, but that would be cheating wouldn't it. I ended up down by the waterfront in bucksport and got some great shots of a flowering tree with the fort and the bridge in the background. As well as some neat pictures of my truck!

Day 8 -------------- Finally a Self Portrait

This one is pretty self explanatory - but I finally added a self portrait to project 365. Part of the project is to show how much you have changed...well I don't like having my picture taken, so this is my take on a self portrait.

I also had the chance to get some really great pics today - I may post those tonight - but probably will be tomorrow!

Day 6 ------- A little Art-ey

I wanted to do something a little different for today's picture. I had this whole elaborate plan on my way home from work on what I wanted to do, and as you may of guessed already...that didn't work. So on a whim I took a picture of our house, and while it was still being exposed, I moved the camera (on purpose) and this is the picture I got. It's our house!

Day 5 ---- A special Event for a Great Cause

This has been a very busy weekend for us. If you read yesterday's post then you know that we had a wedding to photograph and now we have over 1100 photographs to go through (most of them in RAW...eeeeeeeeeeeeeekkk) So I am excited to get to look at those, I know...I haven't even looked at them. When I do a wedding I like the pictures to sit for a day or two before I edit them, I have no idea why, but it works for me. Anyway today isn't about the wedding, today is about a great event that Brandi and I were able to assist with. We both work for Bank of America and as part of Team Bank of America we were captains of a rest stop along the 50k and 25k Tour de Cure for the American Diabetes Association. I think its a great cause, and I am so pleased that we were able to participate. It also allowed me to get back to one of my great photographic loves...sports photography. It's where my career started, so it was exciting to be able to get back into sports photography. Today's picture isn't of actual action photography but of some of my colleagues and their spouses and significant others that are participating in the race either as part of Team Bank of America or as part of the Belfast Bicycle Club. Both are great organizations and this photo is a tribute to them all, and today was a tribute to the ADA and all the great work they do.

Day 4

It's late - I bet you thought I was going to skip a day - but I fooled you, I got day 4 in. Brandi and I had a wedding to photograph today that's why today's post is coming in at 10pm. And if you'll notice that today's photo is NOT from the wedding. Typically I don't share the photos from any shoot until the clients have seen them first. I might give everyone a sneak peek though in the next few days. We'll see how generous I am feeling. Enjoy today's photo!

Day 3 ----- Plan B

Ok, so you may be wondering why this is the plan B version of today's picture. Well being the professional I am, I am not too embarrassed to tell you why. I worked late today so I didn't have the extra time that I have in the past to find today's photograph. So I had a brain storm...I would take a picture of the new Penobscot Narrows Bridge. I was starting to get excited about this because our business is in Bucksport, it seems that the bridge is the new symbol of Bucksport - easy match huh! Well it turns out that it wasn't so easy. I pulled over to the rest stop tonight to take the picture with the lights of Bucksport on and the lights of the Bridge on. Well I got out of the truck and got all composed and tried to take the picture and nothing happened...so I didn't panic, I went to the truck's headlights and looked at my camera...no flash card! DOH! So I came home and saw the fruit in the bowl on the table...and that is where today's picture came from! Enjoy!

Day 2

Here is the second day photo! YAY two days in a row now. I happened to be out running errands with my boss today, and in a shopping plaza we went into they had a whole island full of pink tulips. I have honestly never seen them before. They are for breast cancer support. I have always been a big supporter of breast cancer research, my grandmother is a breast cancer survivor, and overall I am just a big supporter of the research that they do. When I am no longer a renter - I will have pink tulips in my yard!

Project 365 Has Begun!

Today is the first day - I have officially started a new project for myself, Brandi, and the business. The project I am referring to is Project 365. All you have to do is take one picture every day and post it. Easy you say...from what I have read it's not so easy, but I am going to give it a try. The first thing that I must begin doing is taking my camera everywhere with me. Today was the first day, I got up and packed a little camera bag and toted my camera with me to work and then out to dinner then home again. Another reason I want to do this project is to hone in my photography skills, as well as experiment with some new techniques. I am going to try to shoot all my photos for Project 365 in RAW format. For any readers who may not know what that is, it is a great format to work with, it is a very large file and you can have a great bit of flexibility in developing your digital prints. I am giving it the old college try anyway. Please follow along with project 365 with me, I am going to be posting my photos here, as well as on a blog through villagesoup.com. So please follow along, leave me comments and start your own project 365. If you are looking for more on this subject I did find a great website - it is: http://photojojo.com/content/tutorials/project-365-take-a-photo-a-day/

Here is my day 1 photo - any one in the Mid Coast area knows this place - it's a Belfast Landmark and a great place to go with your friends. I met Brandi and a friend there tonight after work, we had a great meal, some good laughs and I got this great picture of the sign and the bay. Enjoy!

Spring is in the Air

It seems like I have been spending less and less time writing in this blog, and even less and less time taking pictures. Spring is finally here in Maine, and the buds are out, the tulips and daffodils are out finally, spring is blooming and I am very excited. That also means that wedding season is beginning shortly. We have our first wedding coming right up on the 17th of this month. We met with the bride and her mother, and they are great! Brandi and I are very excited to be working with them, and more importantly are very excited to photograph a wedding.

On another business note, I think we are very close to being up and running on the local internet newspaper so that should get us much more exposure and hopefully book many more weddings so we can grow like we want to.

I have also been spending a little more time surfing the internet and being inspired by other photoraphers in the area. There is one photographer that I am completely facinated with her work, she shows such a passion for photography and her pictures are amazing. Another thing that I have noticed is many photographers are involved with a great project - Project 365. This is something where you must take a picture every single day and post it on your blog or website or wherever you post your photographs. I think this is something that I am going to attempt very shortly. I have challenged Brandi to do the same, or hopefully we can have a joint effort on this and each take a picture each day or trade off days. This way we would get to try out different techniques for photographing as well as practice more with photoshop and lighting.

Which brings me to the tie in for this whole post - we spent an afternoon with Brandi's parents and had a BBQ - this gave me an opportunity to go around the yard and photograph some of the spring flowers that had bloomed, and my whole purpose for this is to try out RAW format in my camera. It is a feature that I haven't tried before, and something I am not 100% comfortable with, but I took some photos, I think they came out well - I have posted one here. I really just need to become more comfortable with RAW because it is so versitle, and allows much more editing to take place. I would really like to try to start limiting my flash use, especially indoors. I am going to practice a little more and maybe shoot the upcoming wedding in half RAW, half JPEG, especially since the ceremony is inside and the pastor does not allow flash photography...eeeeek...

I will definatly be posting more, especially when I start Project 365 - I am going to do it - its just a matter of when.

Life is not a race, but indeed a journey. Be honest. Work hard. Be choosy. Say 'Thank you', 'I love you', and 'Great job' to someone each day. Let your handshake mean more than pen and paper. Dreaming does matter. It allows you to become that which you aspire to. Appreciate the little things in life and enjoy them. Some of the best things really are free. Take time for yourself - plan for longivity.
